Who We Are

Real lawyers who've been in the trenches and know what it takes to get results when everything's on the line.

Our office

Our Story

Look, we didn't start Shadow Rath Nexus because we wanted fancy office furniture or our names on billboards. We started it because we got tired of seeing good people get crushed by a system that doesn't always play fair.

Back in 2012, three of us were sitting in a downtown Toronto bar, frustrated after watching another client get railroaded despite having a solid defense. We'd all worked at big firms where billable hours mattered more than actual justice. That night, we decided to do things differently.

Since then, we've built a practice that focuses on what actually matters - keeping our clients out of jail, protecting their assets, and making sure they don't get taken advantage of. We're not gonna sugarcoat things or make promises we can't keep. What you'll get from us is honest advice and lawyers who'll fight like hell for your rights.

We've handled everything from murder charges to messy corporate disputes, and we've learned that every case is different. There's no cookie-cutter approach when someone's freedom or livelihood is at stake.

Our Philosophy

Everyone who walks through our door has a story. Maybe you made a mistake. Maybe you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe someone's lying about you. Doesn't matter to us - we're not here to judge your choices. We're here to defend your rights and make sure the legal system treats you fairly.

I've represented people accused of horrible things who turned out to be innocent, and I've represented guilty people who still deserved a fair shake. That's how the system's supposed to work, even if it doesn't always feel that way.

Legal jargon is useful in court, but it's useless when you're trying to make decisions about your case. We'll explain things in plain English. If your case is strong, we'll tell you. If it's weak, we'll tell you that too and figure out the best strategy moving forward.

You won't get false hope from us, but you also won't get doom and gloom. You'll get the truth as we see it, along with realistic options for how to proceed. Some lawyers like to keep clients in the dark - we think that's garbage.

Most cases settle before trial, and that's often the smart move. But prosecutors and opposing counsel need to know you've got a lawyer who's ready to take things all the way if necessary. We prepare every case like it's going to trial because that's how you get leverage at the negotiating table.

I've tried over 200 cases, and my partners have similar track records. We're comfortable in the courtroom, and it shows. When the other side knows you're not bluffing, suddenly everyone becomes more reasonable about finding solutions.

Nothing's worse than paying a lawyer and not being able to reach them when you need answers. We keep our caseloads manageable so we can actually respond to calls and emails. You'll have direct contact info for your lawyer, not just a receptionist who takes messages.

Yeah, sometimes we're in court or with other clients, but we'll get back to you the same day unless it's an emergency - then you'll hear from us within an hour. Your case matters to you, which means it matters to us.

Marcus Rath

Marcus Rath

Senior Partner - Criminal Defense

Started as a Crown prosecutor, so yeah, I know how the other side thinks. Spent seven years putting people away before I realized I was better suited for defense work. These days I handle serious criminal charges - the kind that come with heavy sentences if you lose.

Senior Partner - Civil Litigation

I don't mess around when it comes to contract disputes and business litigation. Worked at Bay Street firms for eight years before joining Shadow Rath. Got tired of representing corporations that could afford to waste money on endless motions. Now I help small businesses and individuals who actually need smart legal strategy.

Senior Partner - Family & Immigration

Family law and immigration cases hit different because they're so personal. I've helped people fight for custody of their kids and stay in the country they call home. It's emotionally draining work, but it matters. My own family immigrated here from Poland, so I get what's at stake.

Associate - Personal Injury

Got into personal injury law after watching my uncle get screwed by an insurance company following a car accident. Now I make sure that doesn't happen to my clients. Insurance adjusters love to lowball people who don't have representation - I make that much harder for them.

Associate - Criminal Defense & Appeals

I'm the research guy. While Marcus is in court arguing, I'm usually buried in case law finding precedents that'll help our clients. Also handle appeals when trial decisions go sideways. Not as flashy as trial work, but just as important when someone's conviction needs to be overturned.

Our Journey

2012

Foundation

Three frustrated lawyers left their corporate gigs and opened a small office above a coffee shop on Queen Street. Our first client was referred by a bartender who'd heard us complaining about the legal system.

2014

First Major Win

Marcus got an acquittal on a second-degree murder charge that everyone said was unwinnable. Client walked free after three years of pretrial detention. Word got around fast after that.

2016

Expansion

Moved to our current Bay Street location and brought on Sarah and Raj. Started taking on more complex civil litigation cases alongside our criminal defense work.

2019

Landmark Case

Diana won a $2.3M judgment for a small tech company that got screwed over by a larger competitor. The case set new precedent for contract interference claims in Ontario.

2022

Recognition

Got named one of Toronto's top criminal defense firms by Canadian Lawyer Magazine. Not gonna lie, that felt pretty good considering where we started.

2025

Today

We've handled over 1,500 cases and we're still doing what we started out to do - fighting for people who need someone in their corner. Just with better office furniture now.
